When Pedro Reis moved from Brazil to San Diego five years ago, one of his first discoveries was kombucha. Pedro, who is a professional diver, surfer and yogi (and, incidentally, the cousin of supermodel Adriana Lima), found that booch was the ideal elixir for his active lifestyle. He quickly dove into creating his own brews, which became an instant hit with his friends in the local Ocean Beach surfer community.
Pedro soon decided to go commercial, and called his brand Vida, which means life in his native Portuguese. We happen to think that it’s an apt name for a really wonderful local brand that embodies the healthy beachy spirit of California. The brand has four main flavors, each using a mix of green and black teas. His Ginger brew is one of the cleanest, crispest and most satisfying ginger flavors we’ve ever tried. It has this nice softness to it, that balances well with the bite of the ginger.
And how cool is the label? The funky mermaid figure is a mix of the Mother Goddess of the ocean, Yemanjá, and the mysticism of the Hindu culture, as Pedro explains. “The ocean is my home,” he says. “I believe the mermaid has always watched out for me. She is also a mother and I related it with the Scoby behavior.”
