Don't be fooled by the whimsical flying piggy illustration on the label; Cincinnati-based Skinny Piggy Kombucha doesn't play around when it comes to kombucha. This is seriously amazing booch. First, the name. We simply pigs! Did you know the average pig has the intellectual equivalence of a three-year-old human child? They are some of the best problem solvers in the animal kingdom. So hurray for piggies and hooray to Skinny Piggy for making them their namesake!
They chose the name, because “before Cincinnati was a city, a lot of wild pigs roamed in the area,” as Skinny Piggy’s founder Algis Aukstoulis explained to us. “As a nod to our beloved town, we made a pig the star of our brand.” The goal of the brand was to “make people smile,” says Algis, and the packaging achieves that for sure.
We were definitely wowed by this booch. The Spring Break flavor, with a hibiscus and white tea blend, was the stand-out for us. It has cherry vanilla and sangria notes, with the most wonderful carbonation. It’s has an almost soda pop-y texture that would appeal to a kid, yet complex notes that are definitely adult-friendly. It’s like a beer-lovers kombucha. Which is no surprise, because Algis had been home-brewing beer for years before getting into kombucha. One of their best-selling stockists, in fact, is a brewery in Cincinnati.
The Original flavor also has pleasant vanilla notes and is super crisp and earthy, and the Fireside Chai is a beautiful, spicy and sweet concoction that is super unique. These are creatively-brewed flavors with a lot of thought behind them. “Fermentation has been a great hobby, and I've made some strange stuff,” says Algis. “However, kombucha stuck with me the most.” We can certainly understand why, and look forward to seeing this lovely local brand grow!
