SOMA

Based in: Portland, OR
Founded: 2013
Distribution: Pacific Northwest

Owner Jean-Pierre Parent has a vision of a better future by brewing kombucha in a zero-waste environment. SOMA's past is a familiar story in the kombucha world: sharing home-brews with his yoga students led Jean-Pierre to requests for purchase and, eventually, the beginnings of SOMA. But what is entirely unique about SOMA? They operate a hidden speakeasy in downtown Portland, where visitors can sip on booch while lounging around barefoot (or booties if you don't like going barefoot) in an oasis-like atmosphere. Sounds like heaven to us! Since brewing occurs in the speakeasy setting, staying barefoot is critical for cleanliness.

Unique flavors keep bursting from SOMA's brewery: Chaga Mushroom Lemonade Kombucha, Coffee-Boocha, Mulberry Maca, Turmeric Coconut, Sprouted Flax, Smoky Squash, and Colloidal Silver—along with the more traditional flavors—show both the healthy and adventurous spirit of Jean-Pierre.

Colloidal Silver is a mighty fine brew. What is “colloidal silver,” you may ask? According to SOMA, it is “the result of an electromagnetic process that pulls charged ions from 99.99% pure silver into glacio-volcanic water that’s been steam-distilled.” Whoa. In layman’s terms, though, it has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. So, basically, it’s super great to have when you feel like you’re a bit under the weather. The taste of this amber-colored beverage is very unique. The lemon and ginger combine really nicely, with just enough sweetness and plenty of bite. It has a bit of a kick, but also a nice smoothness when it goes down.

And Cherry Chai is, simply, wow. Cherry, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black pepper all tangle in this exotic brew. Perhaps the secret is in the water: It’s brewed in pure volcanic glacier water! Just one of the things that make SOMA such a special brand.
