It took Ottawa’s first kombucha company, Culture Kombucha, to transport our founder Stacy back to her childhood in Soviet Russia in the late 70s. Back in those days, one of the only ways to get a carbonated beverage was at an automatic soda stand, where you popped in a coin, and out poured a ginger-ale like drink called “gazirovka” into an 8oz glass. She never forgot the taste and has been searching for something similar ever since.
Enter Culture’s Ginger flavor. Something in the way it’s brewed (using a black tea base) yields a most lovely, light, ginger ale-like, dry flavor that instantly reminded Stacy of her beloved gazirovka. So, perhaps a bit of bias there, but for that fact alone, Culture gets an automatic like from us.
The Raspberry Mint flavor also wowed us with its refreshing zing of peppermint extract, and we really like the old-school-milk-bottle shape with its cleanly designed label.
The brand is the brainchild of Wentsi Yeung, who began selling it a year and a half ago. “It was always a fantasy of mine,” she told us of her desire to bring her beverage to the market. Now, the fantasy is real, and although Wentsi still juggles her passion with a full-time job, the company is growing steadily and have plans to expand outside of Ottawa. Overall, we’re convinced that Canada has a special magic touch when it comes to brewing kombucha.
