Kombrewcha has a story that’s as interesting as the brews themselves. The brand was co-founded by Barry Nalebuff—one of the co-founders of Honest Tea, which sold its own kombucha until the Great Kombucha Bust of 2010 (for those that don’t know or remember: That’s when Whole Foods decided to pull all booch from its shelves after some failed to meet the .5% abv restrictions for soft drinks; brands were forced to then reconfigure their formulas). So Honest stopped selling kombucha altogether. Around that time, it was also fully acquired by Coca-Cola, and Barry moved on to new things.
That new thing became a higher-alcohol kombucha that would be marketed to beer aficionados. Kombrewcha was born. And even though it's still technically kombucha, because of its higher alcohol content; therefore, it’s in a new category: “tea-beer.”
The Original is a solid booch with apple cider notes, and overtones of beer, thanks to its dense fizziness. It reminded us a bit of a Hefeweizen! Lemongrass is more on the soda poppy spectrum of kombucha drinks. It’s kind of like 7Up meets kombucha. Both flavors have only 4g of sugar per bottle and are sweetened with agave nectar, which is different for booch.
